The contrast with Babel is immediate and important. Babel’s builders say, “let us make us a name.” God says to Abram, “I will…make thy name great.” Human beings seek greatness by concentrating power and securing their own reputation; God gives a name by grace and attaches that gift to a mission of blessing. The story therefore moves from self-made greatness and scattering to God-given blessing intended ultimately for the scattered families.

The New Testament makes the worldwide dimension explicit. Galatians 3:8 quotes the Abrahamic blessing promise and says Scripture “preached before the gospel unto Abraham,” anticipating the justification of the nations by faith. Matthew opens by naming Jesus “the son of Abraham,” placing Christ inside the promise-bearing family. The New Testament does not treat Abraham as an isolated patriarch; it sees the gospel to the nations as the mature unfolding of the promise introduced here.

Acts 7 also retells Abraham’s call, emphasizing that the God of glory appeared to him and brought him into the land. Revelation 7’s multitude from every nation, kindred, people, and tongue can be read as the great canonical horizon of the same nations-blessing trajectory, though Revelation does not explicitly quote Genesis 12 in that scene.

The integrated story is: nations scattered at Babel → Abram called → God promises nation, name, blessing, and worldwide blessing → Abraham’s family becomes Israel → Jesus is identified as Abraham’s son → the gospel goes to the nations → Scripture closes with a redeemed multinational people before the Lamb. The strongest New Testament interpretation is Galatians 3:8, because Paul explicitly calls the promise “gospel” announced beforehand.
