The Restrainer, the Lawless One, and the Breath of Jesus’ Mouth
Paul says the Thessalonians know what restrains and who restrains, but modern readers do not possess his earlier oral explanation. The Roman Empire, Holy Spirit, church, Michael, gospel proclamation, and God’s sovereign restraint have all been proposed. Chrysostom knew Spirit and Roman-Empire readings and preferred Rome; antiquity does not make the identification inspired.
What is clear is the outcome. Isaiah 11:4 says the righteous Davidic ruler kills the wicked “with the breath of his lips.” Paul applies that royal victory pattern to the Lord Jesus, who destroys the lawless one with “the breath of his mouth” and the manifestation of his coming.
