Arrest in the Garden: 'I Am' and the Cup
Jesus crosses the Kidron into a garden where Judas arrives with soldiers and officers. Rather than being surprised, Jesus steps forward and identifies himself; when he says “I am,” the arresting group draws back and falls to the ground. John does not stop to explain the fall, so claims about a formal theophany should be made cautiously, though the scene strongly displays Jesus’ sovereign self-presentation. Peter strikes with a sword, but Jesus stops violent defense and says he must drink the cup the Father has given him. The cup belongs to the Old Testament’s judgment-and-suffering imagery and frames the Passion as obedient reception, not accidental defeat.
