Deliverance and a Remnant Among the Nations
Micah’s ruler promise is immediately placed in the pressure of Assyria. The “land of Nimrod” is biblical shorthand for the Mesopotamian world associated with Nimrod in Genesis 10. Assyria is therefore not an abstract evil code in the first horizon; it is the terrifying imperial power of Micah’s world.
The passage then pictures Jacob’s remnant among many peoples in two opposite ways. It is like dew and showers—life-giving gifts that come from the LORD rather than human control. It is also like a lion among sheep—powerful and impossible to stop. Restoration is not described as mere survival. God’s scattered people become consequential among the nations.
