The Man Born Blind and the Light of the World

Seeing a man blind from birth, the disciples ask whose sin caused the condition. Jesus refuses the simplistic equation between a particular disability and a particular personal sin and turns the moment toward God’s work. He again calls himself the light of the world, makes mud, sends the man to wash in the Pool of Siloam, and the man returns seeing. The healing joins creation-like action, sending, water, and sight. Archaeological work at Siloam helps readers picture a real Jerusalem setting, but A careful reading should say what archaeology can show—place and context—not pretend it proves every theological claim.
