Hard Saying, Spirit and Life, and the Twelve
Many disciples call Jesus’ teaching hard and withdraw. Jesus refuses to dilute his claim, points toward the Son of Man ascending where he was before, and says that the Spirit gives life while his words are Spirit and life. Peter answers for the Twelve: Jesus has the words of eternal life and is God’s Holy One/Christ according to textual tradition. Yet the chapter ends with Judas already identified as the coming betrayer. John therefore closes the bread discourse by contrasting true reception, offended departure, and hidden unbelief even within the inner circle.
