The First Sign at Cana
At a wedding in Cana Jesus turns water held in large stone purification jars into wine. John calls this the “beginning of signs”: its purpose is not to showcase spectacle but to reveal Jesus’ glory and deepen the disciples’ faith. The setting joins purification imagery with the prophetic hope of abundant wine in the age of restoration, yet the Gospel never says the jars themselves were sinful or that Jewish purification was foolish. Later claims that the beverage was merely unfermented grape juice are not demanded by the Greek term or ancient setting and should be treated as later apologetic interpretation, not as what the text states.
