From Adam to Abraham
Chronicles opens with names rather than a scene because the writer is locating restored Israel inside the whole human story. The genealogy moves from Adam through Noah and Shem toward Abraham, showing that Israel’s history does not begin in isolation. For a postexilic community rebuilding its identity, these names say that the God of Israel is the Creator’s God and that the covenant story belongs to a much larger plan. The line also becomes important later in the canon as the ancestry of the Messiah is traced through Abraham and David.
