A Famine of Hearing the Words of the LORD
The coming famine is not for bread or water but for “hearing the words of the LORD.” People wander from sea to sea and north to east seeking a word they cannot find. In the book’s immediate logic, this is judgment on a people who resisted prophetic speech while it was available: eventually rejected revelation becomes unavailable revelation. A popular Christian tradition turns this verse into a direct prediction of roughly four hundred “silent years” between Malachi and John the Baptist. Amos does not state that duration, name the later intertestamental period, or provide that chronology. The idea may function devotionally as an analogy, but it should not be taught as Amos’s explicit prophecy.
