Sun, Moon, and Stars Darkened
Revelation 8:7–12 sounds the first four trumpets against earth, sea, fresh water, and heavenly lights. The judgments echo several Exodus plagues while also drawing on prophetic cosmic-judgment language. Repeated limitation to a “third” shows devastating but not yet total judgment, leaving the narrative poised for the more personal woes that follow.
Revelation 8:13 interrupts the trumpet sequence with an eagle flying through heaven and crying threefold “Woe” over the remaining trumpet blasts. The warning marks a transition: the first four trumpets strike the created order, while the coming woes intensify the conflict and suffering experienced by the earth’s inhabitants.
Revelation’s darkening of sun, moon, and stars belongs to the same prophetic cosmic-darkness vocabulary used by Amos for judgment. This is a possible apocalyptic reuse, not a demonstrable quotation.
