True Judgment, Mercy, and the Hardness That Led to Exile
Zechariah names the covenant practices the earlier generation rejected: execute true judgment, show mercy and compassion, do not oppress widow, orphan, stranger, or poor, and do not plan evil against one another. Their ancestors refused to listen, hardened their hearts ‘as an adamant stone,’ and brought the great wrath that scattered them among nations.
Where this fits in the story: the prophet answers ritual religion with covenant ethics. The same Torah that governed temple worship also defended vulnerable neighbors. Exile was not a random geopolitical accident in Israel’s own theological telling; it was covenant judgment after persistent refusal to hear.
