Come Out of Babylon: The Apple of His Eye
The vision shifts from rebuilding Jerusalem to summoning scattered people home: ‘Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north.’ Babylon had fallen to Persia, but many Judeans still lived throughout the former Babylonian world. The LORD calls Zion’s people to leave the place of exile because he is acting against the nations that plundered them. To touch his people, the text says, is to touch ‘the apple of his eye’—the sensitive pupil.
Where this fits in the story: the first return under Cyrus did not bring every exile home. Biblical return is a process, and Zechariah presses the community to choose restoration rather than permanent accommodation to exile.
