Who Is a God Like You? Mercy and Covenant Faithfulness
Micah closes not with a military plan or a timetable but with the character of God: “Who is a God like unto thee?” The question may deliberately echo the prophet’s own name, Micah/Micaiah, which is built from the question “Who is like YHWH?” Whether the final wording is an intentional authorial name-pun cannot be proved, but the resonance is striking.
The answer is a cascade of mercy. God pardons iniquity, passes over transgression, does not retain anger forever, delights in mercy, has compassion, subdues iniquities, and casts sins into the depths of the sea. The sea image is poetic eradication: forgiven sins are pictured as removed beyond recovery, not as literal objects placed in water.
