Moral Defilement, the Land, and Expulsion
Where this fits in the story: Genesis repeatedly portrays land as belonging to God and human wrongdoing affecting humanity's place on the land; Leviticus now gives covenant land-defilement language explicit legal force.
Where Scripture takes it next: Romans 1 has conceptual overlap in sexual disorder/judgment but does not quote Leviticus 18.
Leviticus 18 warns that the listed practices defile both people and land and says the land can “vomit out” its inhabitants. Leviticus 20 repeats the land-and-separation logic while tying it explicitly to Israel’s calling to be holy and distinct among the nations. The second chapter develops the covenant consequences of the first.
Ezra 9 describes the land as filled with the abominations and impurity of surrounding peoples and frames intermarriage as covenant unfaithfulness. That logic strongly echoes Leviticus 18, where prohibited practices defile the land and lead to expulsion. Ezra applies Torah-shaped land-and-holiness categories in a later historical crisis, but the postexilic application should not be collapsed into the original Levitical setting without qualification.
Acts 15 prohibits Gentile believers from things polluted by idols, sexual immorality, strangled meat, and blood. Many interpreters see a strong background in Leviticus 17–18, where resident aliens as well as Israelites are addressed in clustered rules about sacrifice, blood, and sexual conduct. The correspondence is serious but debated because the council never names Leviticus 17–18 as its source.
