The Locust Vision: Amos Intercedes
In the first vision Amos sees locusts forming after “the king’s mowings,” when the later growth was beginning. The timing suggests a threat to ordinary subsistence after a royal share had already been taken, though we should not pretend the exact fiscal system is known. Amos does not celebrate judgment; he intercedes: “O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.” The LORD “repented” or relented concerning the announced disaster. In prophetic narrative this language describes a real change in the threatened outcome in response to intercession; it does not mean God discovered he had morally sinned. The scene joins judgment with mercy and shows Amos acting as mediator for the very people who often reject his message.
