Damascus: Cruelty Against Gilead Answered
The repeated formula “for three transgressions … and for four” does not invite a secret numerical code. It is a Hebrew rhetorical way of saying the measure is full: offense has piled upon offense. Damascus is condemned for brutal violence against Gilead, pictured as threshing people with iron. Amos’s first surprise is that Israel’s God judges nations outside Israel. Moral accountability is not confined to covenant Israel, and military cruelty is not excused merely because it occurs in war. The oracle ends with breached defenses, burned royal buildings, and exile. Before Amos ever turns directly against Israel, he teaches the reader that the LORD’s justice reaches international violence as well as religious failure.
