Take with You Words and Return to the LORD
Hosea finally gives Israel the words of repentance it has repeatedly failed to speak. The people are told to return to the LORD, ask him to remove iniquity, and offer the response of their lips. They renounce Assyria, military horses, and the work of their own hands as gods. Political, military, and religious false saviors are rejected together.
The Hebrew phrase rendered in the KJV “the calves of our lips” is textually and translationally important; the Greek tradition expresses the idea as the “fruit of our lips.” Hebrews 13:15 similarly speaks of offering the “fruit of our lips” in praise to God, making Hosea part of an important sacrifice-to-praise trajectory. The connection should be presented as a strong lexical/canonical echo rather than a formal quotation formula.
