Menstrual Impurity
Where this fits in the story: Leviticus 12 explicitly compares postpartum status with menstrual impurity, making Chapter 15 the fuller legal frame.
Where Scripture takes it next: No NT writer directly calls normal menstruation sinful or morally defiling.
Evidence boundary: Menstruation ≠ sin/shame; a morality claim would contradict the passage's category structure.
Leviticus 15 defines menstrual impurity and its duration. Leviticus 18 later prohibits sexual intercourse during that period, using the established niddah category as the legal background for a moral/sexual prohibition. The second passage therefore depends on the purity status described earlier without implying that ritual impurity itself is moral sin.
Leviticus 12 explicitly compares the mother’s initial postpartum impurity period to the impurity of menstruation. Leviticus 15 gives the fuller rules for menstrual discharge and associated impurity, so the later chapter supplies the ritual category Leviticus 12 uses as its comparison point. The link is internal Torah clarification, not moral condemnation of childbirth.
A twelve-year flow of blood belongs to Torah's ritual-impurity framework. Matthew portrays restoration through Jesus without treating ritual impurity as personal moral guilt. The connection explains the woman’s social and ritual setting while preserving an important distinction: ritual impurity in Torah is not the same thing as personal moral guilt.
