The Abomination of Desolation and the Great Tribulation
Jesus tells hearers to respond urgently when they see “the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet,” standing where it ought not. Flight, not curiosity, is the appropriate response. He describes unparalleled distress and warns that false christs and false prophets will offer impressive signs designed to deceive.
Where this fits in the story: Daniel uses abomination language in contexts of desecration and oppression, with the events associated historically with Antiochus IV forming an earlier horizon. Jesus reuses Daniel’s language for a future crisis relative to his disciples, showing how prophetic patterns can recur and intensify.
