Matthew 26:64 — Son of Man Coming in the Clouds
Matthew 26 places Jesus' death inside Israel's Passover and covenant story. At the meal Jesus calls the cup 'my blood of the covenant,' echoing Sinai, and says it is poured out for many for forgiveness. He then quotes Zechariah's struck shepherd, accepts the bitter 'cup' in Gethsemane, and at his trial joins Psalm 110 and Daniel 7 to describe his coming vindication and authority.
False testimony fails to produce a coherent case until the high priest directly charges Jesus concerning Messiah and Son of God. Jesus answers with language joining Psalm 110’s right-hand enthronement and Daniel 7’s cloud-coming Son of Man, prompting the charge of blasphemy.
Where this fits in the story: Psalm 110 and Daniel 7 unite royal/heavenly authority; Matthew has prepared both trajectories throughout the Gospel.
Where Scripture takes it next: the resurrection and Great Commission will vindicate Jesus’ claim to universal authority.
Evidence boundary: reconstructing the exact legal procedure of the hearing requires comparison with later rabbinic law, Josephus, Roman provincial practice, and the Gospel accounts; later Mishnah rules cannot simply be projected backward without qualification.
At his trial Jesus applies Daniel 7’s Son-of-Man cloud-coming scene to himself, joining it with Psalm 110’s right-hand enthronement.
