Holy Lives under New Heavens and a New Earth
Peter asks the question apocalyptic teaching is supposed to produce: “what manner of persons ought ye to be?” The coming dissolution of the present order is not offered for speculation alone but for holy conduct and godliness. Believers look for the Day of God and, “according to his promise,” for new heavens and a new earth where righteousness dwells. That promise reaches back especially to Isaiah’s new-creation language and forward to Revelation’s vision of a new heaven and new earth. The thread is not annihilation for annihilation’s sake. Scripture’s trajectory moves from creation, through judgment and corruption, toward a renewed dwelling characterized by righteousness and God’s final order. This is one of the clearest places in 2 Peter where the whole Bible’s Creation → Judgment → New Creation story comes into view.
