A Royal Priesthood and Holy Nation
Peter gathers some of the Old Testament’s most identity-defining language into two verses. Exodus 19 supplies “royal priesthood” and “holy nation”; Isaiah contributes the people formed to declare God’s praise; Hosea supplies the reversal from “not a people” to “the people of God” and from “no mercy” to having received mercy. The result is not a loose string of proof texts. Peter presents believers as a people created by God’s mercy to proclaim the One who called them from darkness into marvelous light. Sinai, prophetic restoration, and mercy converge in a Christ-centered community scattered among the nations.
