Beautiful Feet, Hearing, and Israel’s Persistent Refusal
Calling requires believing, believing requires hearing, hearing requires proclamation, and proclamation requires sending. Paul’s missionary logic is then filled with Scripture. Isaiah 52 supplies the “beautiful feet” of the good-news herald, Isaiah 53 voices the lament that not all obey the report, and Psalm 19 provides language of a message going out broadly.
Paul next quotes Deuteronomy 32 about Israel being provoked by a “no people,” then Isaiah 65 about God being found by those who did not seek him while stretching out his hands to a disobedient people. Gentile inclusion is therefore not Paul improvising after Israel’s response; he frames the mission within patterns already present in Israel’s Scriptures.
