A Light for the Gentiles
Acts 13:42–52 centers on a light for the gentiles. Many listeners want more, but growing crowds trigger opposition from some synagogue leaders. Paul and Barnabas say the word was rightly spoken first to them, yet because it is rejected they turn outward, quoting Isaiah 49:6: 'I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles' so salvation reaches the ends of the earth. Gentiles rejoice, disciples are filled with joy and the Holy Spirit, and the word spreads.
The wider biblical story comes into focus here. Isaiah’s servant mission and Jesus’ Acts 1:8 commission converge in apostolic mission. The servants now carry the Servant’s light, so the Messiah’s mission extends through his witnesses rather than being replaced by them.
