John the Baptist Identifies the Coming One
Priests and Levites question John about Messiah, Elijah, and “the Prophet,” showing that several biblical expectations were alive at once. John refuses every title that would make him the center and identifies himself with Isaiah 40:3, the voice preparing the way of the LORD. He then calls Jesus “the Lamb of God,” a title with several plausible scriptural horizons: Passover, sacrificial lambs, Isaiah’s servant led like a lamb, and possibly Abraham’s promised provision. Because John does not name one background, A careful reading should show the converging possibilities rather than pretending one is certain. The Spirit’s descent and remaining identifies Jesus as the one who gives the Holy Spirit.
