The Sower, the Word, and the Mystery of Hearing
Jesus’ sower parable describes one word encountering different kinds of hearing. The seed is identified as the word of God; the soils expose how the devil, pressure, cares, riches, pleasures, and patient endurance affect the word’s fruitfulness.
Where this fits in the story: Scripture repeatedly uses seed, fruit, harvest, and hearing as images for covenant response. Luke places unusual weight on persevering hearing: good soil holds the word fast and bears fruit “with patience.”
A major “aha”: riches appear here not as neutral scenery but as one of the forces capable of choking the word. That concern will become much more explicit in Luke 12, 16, 18, and 19.
