Matthew 8:17
After the Sermon, Matthew shows Jesus' authority in action. He cleanses an excluded man, heals at a distance for a Gentile officer, bears sickness in fulfillment of Isaiah, demands costly discipleship, stills a storm, and commands demons. The repeated question is no longer only 'What does Jesus teach?' but 'Who has authority like this?'
Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law and then many others. Matthew interprets the healing ministry through Isaiah 53:4: “Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” The Gospel therefore connects physical restoration with the Servant passage without reducing Isaiah’s suffering language to one dimension.
Where this fits in the story: Isaiah 52:13–53:12 describes the Servant’s suffering, bearing, rejection, and vindication. Matthew selects the sickness-bearing line to interpret Jesus’ healings.
Where Scripture takes it next: Matthew’s passion narrative will return to Servant-shaped suffering more broadly.
Evidence boundary: Matthew 8:17 explicitly applies Isaiah 53:4 to healing; this does not by itself settle every later theological debate about whether physical healing is guaranteed in the atonement in the present age.
What this miracle reveals: The same authority seen in public ministry enters an ordinary home. Peter’s mother-in-law is restored immediately enough to rise and resume normal life, showing a complete restoration rather than a slow recovery.
What this miracle reveals: The numbered miracle stories are only samples. In this single evening the Gospels describe many sick and demonized people being restored; Matthew also reads the healing ministry through Isaiah 53:4. Any total such as “37 miracles” is therefore a way of counting recorded episodes, not the total number of people Jesus healed.
Isaiah 53:4 → MAT 8:17: the later passage directly quotes Isaiah in a Christological context.
