Matthew 21:33–44
Matthew 21 brings Jesus into Jerusalem as Scripture's humble king. Psalm 118 fills the road with Hosanna; Isaiah and Jeremiah fill the temple confrontation with prophetic meaning; Psalm 8 answers children's praise; Isaiah's vineyard and Psalm 118's rejected stone interpret the leaders' rejection. Jerusalem is no longer simply the destination—it becomes the place where kingship, temple, authority, fruit, and judgment collide.
Jesus retells Isaiah’s vineyard world as a tenant story: servants are beaten and killed, then the owner’s son is murdered. The leaders pronounce judgment on the tenants before realizing the parable targets them. Jesus then quotes Psalm 118’s rejected stone becoming the cornerstone and speaks of a people producing kingdom fruit.
Where this fits in the story: Isaiah 5’s vineyard indicts unfruitful Israel; the prophets themselves were repeatedly rejected; Psalm 118 joins rejection with divine reversal.
Where Scripture takes it next: 1 Peter and Acts reuse the rejected-stone text around Jesus.
Evidence boundary: “the kingdom…given to a nation bringing forth fruits” has been used for sweeping replacement-theology claims. The text certainly announces judgment and transfer of kingdom stewardship/fruit expectation, but the identity and scope of the “nation” should be interpreted within the whole NT rather than reduced to an anti-Jewish slogan.
Parable focus — Wicked Tenants: The vineyard, rejected messengers, rejected son, and rejected stone form a judgment on accountable leadership and rejection of God’s messengers and Son. It should never be turned into anti-Jewish contempt; Matthew says the leaders recognize the parable is aimed at them.
Isaiah 5:1-7 → MAT 21:33-44: the later passage strongly echoes or develops Isaiah’s language, pattern, or promise in a Christological context.
