Foundation Day: Praise, Shouting, and Weeping Together
When the builders lay the foundation, priests sound trumpets, Levites clash cymbals, and the people praise the LORD with the familiar refrain that he is good and his mercy endures forever. Yet the scene refuses easy triumph. Older priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple weep loudly while others shout for joy.
That mixed sound is the theology of Ezra in miniature. God has truly restored something: the people are back, worship has resumed, and a new temple is rising. But restoration is not the same as returning history to its former glory. The community can remember Solomon’s temple, Davidic kingship, national independence, and the glory lost in judgment.
