Time, Chance, and the Limits of Human Advantage
Speed does not guarantee victory, strength does not guarantee military success, wisdom does not guarantee food, and skill does not guarantee favor. “Time and chance happeneth to them all” describes the unpredictability people experience; it does not erase the book’s repeated affirmations of God’s work and judgment. Human advantages are real but not absolute. Like fish caught in a net or birds in a snare, people can be overtaken suddenly by circumstances they did not foresee. Ecclesiastes therefore warns against treating competence as control.
