One Visible Event Comes to All
The righteous and wise are “in the hand of God,” yet observable circumstances do not let human beings read God’s favor mechanically. Death comes to the righteous and wicked alike. Verses 5–6 say the dead no longer know or participate in anything “under the sun.” These statements have played a major role in debates about the intermediate state and “soul sleep,” but their immediate horizon is life in this world: the dead no longer take part in its work, rivalries, rewards, or memories. Ecclesiastes itself later says the spirit returns to God, and the wider canon develops resurrection and judgment much more fully. The passage must therefore be allowed to speak honestly about death’s finality from the earthly viewpoint without being made to carry more systematic afterlife doctrine than its context supplies.
