The Glory Moves to the East Gate
The glory of the LORD leaves the temple threshold and moves with the cherubim to the eastern gate. The departure happens in stages, underscoring the tragedy: the presence that made the sanctuary holy is withdrawing because the sanctuary and city have persistently rejected the God who dwelt there.
Presence / covenant lens: Ezekiel’s temple judgment is dramatized as the glory of the LORD withdrawing in stages. The tragedy is not merely that a building will be destroyed; the covenant people have polluted the place associated with divine presence. The later eastward return of glory in Ezekiel 43 deliberately reverses this scene.
