The Furnace and the Mysterious Fourth Figure
The furnace is heated beyond ordinary measure, the executioners themselves are killed by the flames, and the three bound men are seen walking free in the fire. Nebuchadnezzar then sees a fourth figure whose appearance he describes in Aramaic with language that can mean “like a son of the gods” or “like a divine being.”
Test the tradition — “Jesus in the fiery furnace”: Christian readers have long seen the fourth figure as a possible pre-incarnate appearance of Christ. That is a meaningful historic Christological reading, especially when the whole canon’s divine-deliverer themes are considered. But Daniel does not name the figure as the Messiah, and Nebuchadnezzar later calls the deliverer an “angel” (3:28). a responsible reading should therefore label this traditional typology/possible Christological reflection, not explicit prophecy or explicit NT identification.
