The Debt Crisis Among the Returned People
The greatest threat in chapter 5 does not come from Sanballat or Tobiah but from within Judah. Poor families report food shortages, mortgaged fields and houses, taxes, debt, and children forced into debt servitude. The complaint exposes a painful contradiction: the community is rebuilding Jerusalem while some Judeans are enriching themselves at the expense of fellow covenant members. Torah had placed strong limits around interest, pledges, debt, and treatment of impoverished Israelites. The crisis therefore turns the restoration story inward. A wall can protect people from external enemies, but it cannot make a society just. Nehemiah must confront exploitation among the very people doing the rebuilding.
