God's Glory Declared – A Name That Defines His Nature
After the devastating events of the golden calf, Moses is called back up Mount Sinai. This time, he brings stone tablets he has carved himself, prepared to receive again the words of the covenant. God descends in a cloud and stands with Moses, proclaiming His name: 'The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.' These verses (Exodus 34:6–7) become one of the most frequently quoted descriptions of God throughout the rest of Scripture.
This declaration is monumental. It shows us a God who is not only holy and just but also deeply merciful and relational. He does not excuse sin, but neither does He destroy without offering grace. Moses responds by bowing low and pleading for God’s continued presence among His people, despite their stubbornness.
