The Mind of Christ: Humiliation, Cross, and Exaltation
Paul tells the church to think with the pattern visible in Christ Jesus. Christ is described in “the form of God,” yet he does not use equality with God as something to exploit for self-advantage. He makes himself of no reputation, takes the form of a servant, becomes truly human, humbles himself in obedience, and goes as far as death on a cross. God then highly exalts him and gives him the name above every name.
Where this fits in the story: the climax echoes Isaiah 45, where the LORD declares that every knee will bow and every tongue swear allegiance to him. Philippians applies that universal homage to Jesus: every knee bows and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord, “to the glory of God the Father.” The passage therefore joins humility, the cross, exaltation, divine identity, and universal lordship.
