Jehoiachin and the 597 BCE Deportation
Jehoiachin surrenders to Babylon; the king, court, skilled workers, and temple treasures are carried away while Zedekiah is installed. Babylon replaces Assyria and Egypt as the decisive imperial power over Judah. Jehoiakim’s rebellion, Jehoiachin’s deportation, and the appointment of Zedekiah show the kingdom collapsing in stages; Matthew later names Jeconiah and the Babylonian deportation in Jesus’ genealogy, turning this catastrophe into a major canonical bridge.
