Haman the Agagite and Mordecai’s Refusal
Haman’s title is one of Esther’s most important canonical signals: he is repeatedly called “the Agagite.” Mordecai, meanwhile, was introduced as a Benjaminite connected with Kish. Those names invite the reader back to 1 Samuel 9 and 15. Saul son of Kish, a Benjaminite, failed to carry out judgment against Agag king of Amalek. Esther now places a Kish-associated Benjaminite opposite an Agagite.
That connection is strengthened later when the Jews repeatedly refuse the plunder in Esther 9, directly reversing Saul’s seizure of Amalekite spoil. Esther is not merely telling a court story; it deliberately replays an unfinished conflict from Israel’s earlier history.
