The People Bind Themselves to the Law
The wider community joins the leaders and enters an oath to walk in God's law. The commitments focus on areas that will reappear in chapter 13: intermarriage, Sabbath commerce, sabbatical-year practices, and release of debts. This deliberate repetition is literary preparation. The book will eventually show how quickly solemn commitments can be compromised. The marriage restriction must also be read in its biblical context rather than reduced to a modern racial slogan. Deuteronomy's concern includes covenant loyalty and the danger of being turned toward other gods, while Nehemiah 13 adds language and communal-identity concerns. Scripture itself contains more complexity than a simple ethnicity rule.
