A False Prophetic Trap
A man named Shemaiah urges Nehemiah to hide inside the temple because assassins are coming. Nehemiah refuses. His reasoning is both courageous and legal: as a lay governor he has no right to enter forbidden temple space merely to save himself. He concludes that Shemaiah had been hired and that other prophetic voices were being used to frighten and discredit him. The passage is a warning that religious language is not self-authenticating. A message claiming divine urgency must still be tested against God's revealed commands and the moral direction of the situation. Fear can make false counsel sound pious; Nehemiah refuses to let self-preservation turn him into a transgressor.
