Esther Names the Adversary
At the second banquet Esther finally states her petition: “let my life be given me … and my people.” Her hidden identity is now disclosed because remaining hidden can no longer protect the people with whom she identifies.
Esther carefully uses the language of Haman’s own decree—destroyed, slain, and caused to perish. When the king asks who is responsible, she names “the adversary and enemy … this wicked Haman.” The conflict that began as Haman versus Mordecai is revealed as a threat to the queen herself and to an entire people.
