The Mighty Angel Clothed with a Cloud
Revelation 10:1 introduces a mighty angel clothed with a cloud, crowned with a rainbow, radiant like the sun, and standing with feet like pillars of fire. The imagery belongs to the Bible’s divine-glory and heavenly-messenger world, but Revelation calls the figure an angel rather than identifying him as Christ. The scene signals that the message about to be delivered carries immense heavenly authority.
Revelation 10:1–7 places a mighty angel over sea and land with a little open scroll while seven thunders speak words John is forbidden to record. The angel swears by the eternal Creator that delay will end and that God’s mystery will be finished when the seventh trumpet sounds. The sealed thunders remind the reader that Revelation discloses much without claiming to disclose everything.
The mighty angel’s fiery pillar-like legs and cloud-clothing plausibly resonate with the Exodus pillars of cloud and fire that marked divine guidance and presence. The imagery is suggestive, but Revelation does not identify the angel with YHWH or formally cite the wilderness tradition.
