The Names at the End: Priests, Levites, and Families Accounted For
Ezra ends not with a triumphant speech but with names. Priests are listed first, then Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and other Israelites who had taken foreign wives. Some priestly offenders offer a ram as a trespass offering, showing that the crisis is treated not merely as social policy but as covenant guilt.
The ending is deliberately uncomfortable. The book has moved from return, altar, temple, Passover, Torah, and a second safe journey to the discovery that restored people are still sinful people. Geography has been repaired more easily than the human heart. The final list therefore prevents “return from exile” from becoming the Bible’s final solution.
