Ezra the Priest-Scribe Arrives with the Hand of God upon Him
Ezra does not appear in the book named after him until chapter 7. The scene is separated from the temple dedication by decades under the standard chronology. Ezra is introduced through priestly ancestry reaching back to Aaron and through a second identity that will become enormously important in later Judaism: he is a “ready scribe in the law of Moses.”
The repeated phrase “the hand of the LORD his God was upon him” explains Ezra’s success. He receives what he asks from the king, arrives safely, and later acts with courage because Ezra understands his mission as enabled by divine favor rather than merely by imperial credentials.
