Hear a Just Cause and Examine My Steps
Psalm 17 opens as an appeal for vindication. David asks God to hear a just cause, test his heart, and examine his steps. The language is not a claim that David has never sinned; it is a courtroom-style protest of innocence regarding the accusation or attack before him. That distinction matters when reading the psalm beside David’s wider story.
The manuscript contrasted David with Christ’s perfect innocence. That is a legitimate canonical contrast, but Psalm 17:1–5 is not quoted in the New Testament as a prophecy of Jesus. A careful reading should therefore explain David’s immediate plea first, then show that Christian readers ultimately meet the truly sinless righteous sufferer in Christ without calling David’s self-defense a direct prediction.
