Strangers, Bondage, Judgment, Return — The Exodus Announced before Israel Exists
Genesis 15:12–16 reveals the future of Abram’s descendants before Abram even has the promised son. A deep sleep and great darkness fall upon him, and God announces that his seed will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, will be afflicted, and will later come out after God judges the nation that oppressed them. They will return to the promised land in a later generation.
This is one of Genesis’ clearest forward-looking threads because the rest of the Pentateuch narrates its fulfillment. Genesis 46 brings Jacob and the covenant family down into Egypt, where God promises to make them a great nation and bring them up again. Exodus then narrates bondage, divine judgment on Egypt, and departure. Exodus 12 marks the actual going out.
