Twenty-Four Priestly Courses and the Division of Abijah

Aaron’s priestly descendants are organized by lot into twenty-four service divisions. The eighth course falls to Abijah. Centuries later Luke identifies Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, as a priest of the course of Abijah, giving 1 Chronicles 24 one of its clearest explicit New Testament afterlives. The connection is real; attempts to calculate Jesus’ exact birthday from the course alone require additional calendar assumptions Luke does not supply.
