Athaliah’s Usurpation
2 Chronicles 22:10–12 forms the movement “Athaliah’s Usurpation.” When Athaliah, Ahaziah’s mother, saw that her son was dead, she seized power by killing all the royal family of the house of Judah. But Jehosheba, the sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and hid him and his nurse in the temple of God for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land. This act of deliverance preserved the Davidic line in the face of annihilation.
In the book’s larger argument, Ahaziah and Athaliah bring the Davidic line near extinction, yet Joash is hidden and preserved; the chapter creates a powerful royal-preservation pattern that must be distinguished from explicit prophecy.
