Nothing Can Separate Us from the Love of God in Christ
Paul answers the chapter’s suffering with a sequence of triumphant questions. If God is for us, who can finally prevail against us? Romans 8:32 says God “spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all,” language that closely echoes the Greek wording of Genesis 22, where Abraham did not withhold his beloved son Isaac. Paul does not formally quote Genesis 22, but the father/son and “not spare” correspondence creates a powerful canonical echo.
The risen Christ is at God’s right hand and intercedes for believers, participating in the enthronement pattern associated with Psalm 110. Paul then quotes Psalm 44:22—God’s people can truly face slaughter and suffering—yet insists that tribulation, persecution, death, spiritual powers, and the whole created order cannot separate them from God’s love in Christ.
