The Golden Image and the Command to Worship
Nebuchadnezzar erects an enormous golden image and summons officials from across the empire to its dedication. The repeated list of administrators, instruments, peoples, nations, and languages makes the machinery of compulsory worship feel overwhelming. State power, public spectacle, music, and threat work together.
The text does not explicitly tell us whether the image represents Nebuchadnezzar, a deity, imperial unity, or a combination. What it does tell us is enough: bowing is an act of worship the Judean friends cannot give.
Canonical connection: Revelation 13 later presents another image backed by political-religious coercion and death for refusal to worship. The correspondence is too strong to miss, but Revelation is reusing Daniel’s pattern; Daniel 3 should not be reduced to a coded prediction of one future statue.
